Stephanie Khouri, the Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, noted that the recent Central Bank crisis highlighted the fragility of the political process in Libya and revealed the deep divisions within state institutions, emphasizing that this situation cannot continue.

During her briefing before the Security Council today, Wednesday, Khouri explained that the unilateral actions taken by political parties in Libya led to a state of instability, resulting in negative effects on the general conditions in the country.

She pointed out that the Presidential Council's decision to replace the Central Bank Governor in Tripoli caused a political dispute that led to the closure of oil fields and a halt in production and exports, but these tensions ended after reaching an agreement on appointing new leadership for the bank.

Khouri called on Libyan leaders to build on resolving the Central Bank crisis and to take further steps towards achieving a comprehensive political consensus, stressing the need to maintain the independence of state institutions and prevent the exploitation of the country's resources for political purposes.

She also warned of the ongoing disputes over power and constitutional issues, such as the parliament's demand for the dismissal of the Government of National Unity and the issue of establishing a constitutional court in Benghazi, considering that these moves aggravate the divisions in the country.

Khouri confirmed that the current situation has lasted too long and that the Libyan people deserve a better status, calling on the international community and the United Nations to work on managing the crisis in Libya and finding a comprehensive and sustainable solution.

She clarified that the political process in Libya has been stalled for months due to power disputes and legal disagreements over elections, reflecting the significant challenges facing the achievement of consensus among Libyan leaders and finding an exit from the crisis.
