Former American Senator Bob Menendez was convicted on corruption charges that include receiving bribes from three businessmen from New Jersey, as well as acting as an agent for Egypt's interests.
During his trial, it was revealed that Menendez had received gold bars, cash, and a luxury car from one of the defendants in the case. Additionally, he faced charges of influencing U.S. policies in favor of Egypt in exchange for those bribes.
U.S. authorities issued an 11-year prison sentence against Menendez, who resigned from his Senate seat following his conviction. His wife Nadine also faces charges and is set to go on trial next March. Despite his conviction, Menendez insists on his innocence and plans to appeal.
The case has sparked widespread interest, particularly regarding U.S.-Egypt relations, as Washington has been called to reconsider its military aid to Egypt.
