A new public opinion study conducted by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) revealed some interesting statistics about Canadian drivers and their driving behaviors.

The results showed that nearly 70% of Canadians admitted to speeding in residential areas at least once in the past year.

The survey also indicated that half of the participants routinely speed on highways, while one in five drivers said they regularly exceed the speed limit.

The survey confirmed that speeding is not limited to just the younger demographic, but includes all age groups, as drivers of various ages admitted to frequently speeding in residential areas.

In this context, Christine Darbelles, Director of Public Affairs at CAA National,

noted that excessive speed reduces drivers' reaction times and increases risks on the road, explaining that speed leads to increased stopping distances and, consequently, a higher likelihood of collisions.

The survey also showed that drivers' confidence in not getting caught for speeding was high, with only 35% of Canadians believing they could be caught while speeding, while 40% admitted to running a red light. Additionally, 68% of participants acknowledged driving while tired, while 54% admitted to using their phones while driving at least once in the past year.

In recent years, automated speed cameras have become more prevalent in cities, with a study in Toronto showing that cameras helped reduce the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit and contributed to improving driving behavior. In 2023, Toronto City Council approved a proposal to increase the number of speed cameras from 75 to 150 cameras.
