Actress Ashley Judd added her voice to the calls for U.S. President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race after his performance in last month's debate, saying she is concerned about the possibility of him losing to Republican Donald Trump in November.
In an opinion piece published by USA Today on Friday, Judd urged Biden to “voluntarily step aside” so that his party can support a “talented and strong Democrat” for the presidency. She described Biden during the debate as “unable to confront Trump, while he unleashed, unfettered, a torrent of painful lies.”
Judd, who has been an outspoken supporter of Biden and other Democrats across the country, pointed to the political activism that has accompanied her decades-long career in Hollywood. Her allegations against film mogul Harvey Weinstein helped spark the #MeToo movement.
She warned that she fears Trump “will wield the presidency with unprecedented and unfathomable cruelty and injustice” if voters return him to the White House, and Judd said time is of the essence for Democrats to replace Biden with a candidate who can defeat him.
She said, “We do not have another day to distract or divide among us.”
Judd did not suggest a potential alternative to Biden at the top of the ticket, and no representatives immediately returned a message seeking comment on whom she might propose.
Her call comes as Democrats are weighing whether they want Biden to remain their party's nominee, amid concerns about his age and ability to win the general election against Trump.
Earlier this week, lifelong Democrat and movie star George Clooney said in an op-ed for The New York Times that he likes Biden but the party will lose the presidential race as well as any congressional race with him as the nominee. He cited what he described as a diminished Biden during his interactions regarding a fundraising campaign in Los Angeles last month.
Judd was at the White House in April to help the Biden administration promote its new national strategy for suicide prevention, which her mother, singer Naomi Judd, lost her life to in 2022. The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Ashley Judd's statement.
