Parts of Russia and its neighbor Kazakhstan are struggling with the worst floods in almost 80 years, after unexpectedly high temperatures caused an unusual melting of snow accumulated in and around the Ural Mountains.

The local authorities told Bloomberg News that Russia has evacuated more than 30,000 people in both Kurgan and Orenburg since early April.

While the severity of the floods in those areas has begun to ease, they have intensified in the Tyumen region of Siberia, where more than 1,500 people have been relocated and one of the dams is facing collapse.

In Kazakhstan, a statement from the Ministry of Emergency Situations indicated that authorities have asked more than 118,000 people to leave their homes, although about 20,000 have already returned.

It is noteworthy that there is evidence that climate change is causing the floods, which Russian authorities say are the most severe since 1942. Data from the country's meteorological center revealed that vast areas of Russia have been experiencing unusually high temperatures since the second half of March.

In Moscow, temperatures reached 17 degrees Celsius at the end of the month, the highest in more than 40 years.
