Canada reclaimed the Women's World Hockey Championship with a degree of revenge, after losing the gold medal match last year to the United States on ice in Brampton, Ontario, the Canadians turned the tables with a 6-5 overtime victory over the United States yesterday, Sunday, in Utica, New York.
Canadian goaltender Anne-Renee Desbiens said, "Oh my God, it feels good to win it on American soil." "We owed it to them and owed it to ourselves to win this game."
Danielle Serdachny scored the golden goal at 5:16 of overtime during a Canadian power play. The United States was caught with too many players on the ice in overtime in a heavy-hitting battle between the women's hockey teams.
Serdachny scored Canada's second goal of the entire tournament just two seconds before the end of the penalty.
The 22-year-old from Edmonton scored with a backhand shot off a rebound from Erin Ambrose's shot from American goaltender Erin Frankel.
Serdachny said, "I'm still a bit in shock." "I just tried to get the goalie’s eyes away, and the rebound popped right in front of me, so I say I was a bit lucky but I just tried to get everything in. When it was in the net, I couldn't believe it."
Canada's captain Marie-Philip Poulin scored her first two goals of the tournament. The game was tied in the second period and gave her team a brief lead of 5-4 in the third.
The 33-year-old missed three games in the PWHL Montreal prior to the international break and missed Canada's pre-tournament win over Finland due to an undisclosed injury.
As Canadian coach Troy Ryan gradually increased his captain's minutes during the tournament, Poulin was a pesky physical presence, getting under the skin of opposing players before scoring on Sunday.
Ryan said, "Pou will always find a way to be a difference maker." "In the end of the playoffs and in the semifinal, I was impressed with some of the greasy plays with the physicality and finding ways to impact the game."
He said tonight was just a whole other level. I could see in her eyes every time we called her name that she was ready to go. There are very few athletes in the world who can perform under pressure situations like her."
