A court in Quebec has temporarily banned protests near several Jewish institutions in the Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grace area in Montreal, following successive demonstrations outside community buildings in recent days.

Under a court order issued on Tuesday, protests were banned within 50 meters of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue CJA building.

The order also applies to the Cummings Centre, Herzliah High School, the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA, United Talmud Torahs of Montreal Inc., and the court order is valid for the next 10 days and was submitted to several groups

The order also mentions a person named Baraa Eyad Abu Hamid, and it appears the ban prevents anyone, regardless of affiliation, from protesting in these places.

The Quebec Superior Court order comes after an event held at the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in Montreal led to a demonstration followed by a counter-protest on Tuesday evening.

The Montreal branch of Independent Jewish Voices (IV), one of the defendants in the court order, organized a protest against an Israeli real estate event, claiming it marketed properties in the West Bank, where more than two million Palestinians live under Israeli military occupation, according to the United Nations (UN).

The United Nations, along with Canada, considers Israeli settlements in the occupied territories a violation of international treaties, with the federal government stating they pose a serious obstacle to achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace.

CBC News confirmed that Noam Homes, a commercial real estate agency based in Jerusalem, which held the event, advertises properties in the West Bank on its website.
