The Polish president said that his country would be "of course" interested in purchasing Canadian liquefied natural gas if it were available, while the Canadian federal government stated that it is "not interested" in supporting this type of future projects.

Andrzej Duda sat down for a wide-ranging exclusive interview with CTV's question host Vasy Kapelos during a trip to Edmonton this week.

The interview will be broadcasted on Sunday. Duda spoke in Polish through a translator.

When asked whether Poland is interested in Canadian liquefied natural gas, Duda said, "Of course, yes."

He added, "If Canada is ready to supply liquefied natural gas to Poland, we have our LNG terminal... now," noting that there are already plans to expand the existing infrastructure in the country.

Duda stated that Poland is already purchasing LNG from American and Qatari companies, and would be interested in the Canadian product if it could be "purchased at attractive prices."

He added, "In the same way, we would be ready to negotiate and discuss and accept Canadian gas as well."

Duda is the latest European leader to say that he would likely purchase Canadian LNG if it were available; the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also told Kapelos in an exclusive interview with CTV last month that his country would be "of course" interested in the product.

According to Natural Resources Canada, there are eight LNG projects "at various stages of development," with the first export facility expected to start operations next year, directing shipments to some Asian countries.

There has been political controversy for years over whether Canada can or should plan to export to European countries as well.

More than two years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, this issue has gained a new sense of urgency as many Western countries are trying to phase out the purchase of Russian oil.

Germany and Japan have also expressed interest in purchasing LNG from Canada. However, in August 2022, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that he was not convinced that LNG exports should be part of Canada's long-term plan regarding becoming a reliable supplier of clean energy to Europe.

In an interview during CTV's question period last month, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson said that the federal government is "not interested" in supporting future LNG projects, including electrifying currently ongoing projects.

Duda stated that he discussed "energy issues" with Trudeau during the president's recent visit to Canada, but he did not specify whether they addressed the topic of LNG.

In his interview, Duda also discussed Russia's war on Ukraine and the danger of "voracious" Russian imperialism, his relationship with former U.S. President Donald Trump, NATO's defense spending goals, and Poland's "readiness" to host nuclear weapons in the event that NATO expands its nuclear sharing program.
