The far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for the dragging of the bodies of Palestinian martyrs in the occupied territories.
This came during a tumultuous session of the political-security cabinet (the cabinet), last Sunday, to discuss the issue of handing over the bodies of Palestinians from '48, whom the occupation claims carried out attacks against settlers, according to the Israeli newspaper Maariv.
Smotrich, the extremist, said: "We should put the bodies in a cart and drag them into the center of the city, just like they did in the Torah to be a lesson for others," he claimed.
For his part, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said during the session, "The authority of the Defense Minister is to approve the return of the bodies," adding: "The issue of the bodies was raised, and I decided to keep the body of Walid Daqa and release five other bodies," according to the Palestinian news agency Quds.
Gallant added: "National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir decided to ignore me and ordered the police not to obey."
In response, the extremist Minister Ben Gvir replied to Gallant saying, "This is a democratic state; I believe that releasing these bodies is a violation of the law and harms our ability to release them in exchange for captives or the bodies of captives," referring to the Israeli detainees in the Gaza Strip.
Ben Gvir added: "I don’t understand what the rush is to release the bodies; we must continue to hold them."
Transport Minister Merav Michaeli questioned: "I don’t understand how we have captives in Gaza and we will release them? Let’s wait until we reach a deal," she expressed.
Commenting on the ministers' discussions, Gallant said: "So I relinquish my authority to make decisions; decide what you want."
The session came at the request of the family of martyr Walid Abu Daqa to the Supreme Court to release his body, which is held by the occupation authorities.
Abu Daqa, 62 years old, was martyred last April, inside the occupation prisons after a battle with cancer, where he was serving a 38-year sentence after being accused of participating in a resistance operation that resulted in the death of an Israeli soldier in
