Pfizer Inc CEO Albert Bourla said on Saturday that tests confirmed he was infected with COVID-19 for the second time, stating in a statement, "I feel good and asymptomatic." Bourla, 60, had started an oral antiviral treatment course with Paxlovid in August.
The so-called new bivalent shots were also developed by Moderna and the Pfizer and BioNTech team, aimed at addressing the BA.5 and BA.4 Omicron subvariants, which make up 84.8 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively, of all variants circulating in the United States, based on the latest data. Bourla added, "I have not yet received the new bivalent booster, as I was following CDC guidelines to wait three months since the previous COVID case that returned in mid-August."
In the same context, in August, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized updated Pfizer and Moderna booster shots targeting the dominant BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants. A federal health agency also said this week that more than 25 million doses of the new vaccine, mostly consisting of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, have been sent, with increased production of the Moderna vaccine.
