The spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent, Nibal Farsakh, confirmed that the humanitarian situation has exceeded catastrophic levels with the continued Israeli bombing across all parts of Gaza, especially in the Rafah area located in the southern part of the sector.

Farsakh warned, in a special interview with "Cairo News" channel today, Wednesday, of the consequences of intensifying the occupation's military operations in the Rafah area amid the presence of more than half of Gaza's population, which heralds a disaster in every sense of the word.

She pointed to the continued intensification of the occupation's operations in Khan Younis Governorate in the southern sector, confirming that the health sector in Gaza is gasping its last breath after the occupation put all medical centers out of service amid the ongoing siege of Al-Amal Hospital, affiliated with the Red Crescent Society in Khan Younis.

The Palestinian official criticized the Israeli intransigence and obstruction of allowing the opening of a safe humanitarian corridor guaranteeing the entry of urgent and necessary medical aid and supplies to Al-Amal Hospital amid the ongoing siege for more than 16 days.

She expressed her strong astonishment at the international community’s silent stance until this moment despite the continuing violations by the occupation against the Palestinian people, noting a widespread prevalence of many diseases and epidemics among the displaced, including respiratory and skin diseases in addition to viral hepatitis, which threatens their lives with danger and death amid the depletion of materials, supplies, and medical drugs.

She stressed the necessity of ending the war on Gaza immediately and urgently to save what can be saved amid the collapse of the health system, the absence of food security, and the depletion of potable water, with limited entry of humanitarian aid to the people of the sector amid ongoing Israeli intransigence to exterminate the Palestinian people.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned on Tuesday that any move by Israel to expand its ground operation in Gaza to include the densely populated city of Rafah in the southern sector may lead to “war crimes that must be prevented at all costs.”

In a statement, the United Nations quoted Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, as saying to journalists in Geneva that “under international humanitarian law, indiscriminate shelling of densely populated areas can amount to war crimes.”

The statement indicated that this comes as the humanitarian affairs office noted an “increase in strikes” on Rafah Governorate on Sunday and Monday, while thousands of Gaza residents continue to flow into Rafah, including many who fled the heavy bombardment in Khan Younis.

The UN statement pointed to this displacement having increased Rafah’s population to five times its size since the outbreak of the war in Gaza on October 7.

Laerke warned that “intense attacks in Rafah under this situation could lead to significant civilian casualties, and we must do everything we can to avoid that.”

Since October 7, Israeli attacks have killed 27,585 people, the majority of whom are women and children, according to the latest tally from the Gaza Ministry of Health.
