Calgary police have closed several bridges in and around downtown while officers deal with a distressed individual.
Police were called to the Reconciliation Bridge around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday after a man climbed to the top.
Officers have been at the scene since then trying to calm the situation and help the man down.
In the meantime, Fourth and Fifth Avenues – a major artery leading to the heart of downtown – were closed in front of the police command center on the bridge.
By 10 a.m., the highway on Fifth Avenue was reopened, but drivers are still being asked to try alternate routes to reach the heart of downtown until the situation is fully resolved.
EMS as well as Calgary Fire Department are also on scene.
The police said we are aware that access to the heart of downtown is still significantly affected. We thank you for your continued patience as we work to find a safe solution for the individual involved.
Fifth Avenue Bridge is now open.
