The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board is an independent organization responsible for managing defined benefit pension plans for school teachers in the Canadian province of Ontario.
Ontario teachers also invest in a pension fund, which is one of the largest institutional investors in the world. The fund provides a multi-employer pension plan, jointly sponsored by the Government of Ontario and the Ontario Teachers' Federation.
The Ontario Teachers' Federation was established on January 1, 1990. Until then, teachers' pensions in Ontario were solely sponsored by the Government of Ontario. Plan assets were invested only in government bonds. Today, the fund invests globally in fixed income, public and private equity markets, real estate, infrastructure, natural resources, credit, and venture capital through the Teachers' Innovation Platform (TIP).
