Mobile phone users in many provinces and all regions may be surprised by the automated emergency alert today, but participating governments say it is just a test.
The exercise is part of a scheduled trial for Alert Ready, a system used across the country to broadcast warnings on radio and television stations, as well as compatible wireless devices. To receive alerts, mobile phones must be turned on, connected to a cellular network, and have updated software.
The test includes an emergency tone and a message indicating that no action is required from the public. Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia are not participating in the test.
The Alert Ready program was used last year to deliver 173 warnings across Canada for wildfires, hurricanes, flash floods, civil emergencies, police emergencies, and drinking water warnings.
Below is a list of local times when the alert will be sent:
- Alberta - 1:55 PM
- British Columbia - 1:55 PM
- New Brunswick - 10:55 AM
- Newfoundland and Labrador - 10:55 AM
- Northwest Territories - 9:55 AM
- Nunavut - 2 PM.
- Prince Edward Island - 12:55 PM
- Saskatchewan - 1:55 PM
- Yukon - 1:55 PM
