Residents of Ontario aged six months and older will be able to receive the free flu vaccine and the new coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine starting Monday.
Health Minister Sylvia Jones announced the launch of the immunization program today, Sunday, stating that people should ensure their vaccinations are up to date to stay safe and healthy during the season when respiratory illnesses typically increase.
Jones said in a statement, “Getting the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community.”
She added, "Our government is ensuring you have the tools you need this fall respiratory illness season by making COVID-19 vaccines and flu vaccines available at convenient locations close to home, at no cost to Ontario residents."
The Ontario government stated that flu vaccines and the latest coronavirus vaccines will be available at local pharmacies, public health units, and primary healthcare providers across the province.
It also mentioned that receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu vaccine at the same time is safe and convenient as it reduces the need for multiple visits.
Dr. Kieran Moore, the province's Chief Medical Officer of Health, also encouraged Ontario residents to ensure their vaccinations are up to date.
Moore stated, “With the expected co-circulation of influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus during the fall and winter seasons, I encourage Ontario residents to get the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu vaccine as soon as possible.”
“Especially for seniors or those with weakened immune systems or medical conditions that make them particularly vulnerable to harmful respiratory illnesses.”
The new COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna were approved by Health Canada earlier this fall and are designed to target the XBB variant of COVID-19.
The province stated that those aged six months and older can receive a new booster dose against COVID-19 if at least six months have passed since their last vaccine dose or confirmed infection.
The latest COVID-19 health data released by the Ontario Public Health shows a slight increase in the virus's infection rate across most of the province, including the Greater Toronto Area.
