Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, said that "just by being" she and her husband Prince Harry "disrupted the hierarchy dynamics" when they were in the UK.
The former actress made headlines in Britain on Tuesday with comments made during an interview with the American magazine The Cut, which was published on Monday. She said it is not easy to "forgive" when asked if there was room for forgiveness between her and the British royal family and her own family. She also pointed to Harry's strained relationship with his father, Prince Charles, saying: "I think forgiveness is really important, and not forgiving requires a lot of energy, but it takes a lot of effort to forgive."
Meghan (41) and Harry's (37) relationship with the British royal family has been strained since they stepped down from their royal duties and left the UK in early 2020, citing what they described as unbearable interference and racist attitudes from the British media.
Since moving to California, where they now reside with their young children, they have publicly discussed their unhappiness with the royal family. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, Meghan spoke about racism within the monarchy and Harry said Charles stopped answering his calls.
In response to a question about the privacy case Meghan filed against a British newspaper, The Cut - part of New York Magazine - said the Duchess spoke about the devastating impact of the "toxic culture" on her family and Harry's family. She stated: "Harry told me he lost his father in the process," adding to the magazine, "It doesn't have to be the same for them as it was for me, but that is his decision." The magazine later clarified, speaking for Meghan, that the Duchess was referring to the loss of her estranged father, Thomas Markle, and said she hopes this does not happen to Harry and his father.
Apart from that, the couple signed deals with Spotify and Netflix, and the premiere of the show has been launched, a podcast (program) that features Meghan as a host in conversations with celebrities.
