McGill University said it would enhance security measures near the pro-Palestinian camp and elsewhere on campus following concerns about a promotional poster for a summer camp that raised questions for some about what is actually being taught.

Ziad Abi Saad, a member of the Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR), said in an interview: "It's about teaching the struggle against colonialism, it's about teaching history."

However, the camp and the poster used to promote it – which shows at least two armed individuals – are being criticized by the Jewish human rights group B'nai Brith.

The camp's description states it "transforms McGill" into a space for "revolutionary education," focusing on programs about "the history of Palestinian resistance," "the ongoing Nakba," "various fronts of the movement," and "media post-October 7."

The organizers defended the use of the image on Friday.

Abi Saad said: "Look, this is a historical image, a historical image." "This is an image, as I said, of a colonized people studying the anti-colonial movement."

McGill issued a statement late Friday afternoon saying the publication is "extremely concerning." The university stated it has informed "municipal, regional, and federal public safety authorities."

McGill President and Vice-President Deb Saini added: "I want to emphasize that this is just the latest escalation in the intimidation and fear strategy that SPHR has long pursued."

B'nai Brith expressed its outrage.

Henry Toppas, the regional director in Quebec for B’nai Brith Canada, told CTV News, "Can you imagine an acceptable poster showing... perhaps camp counselors carrying a machine gun?"

However, the camp organizers say the courses will extend the workshops they have already provided, and those counselors will be academics.

Abi Saad said: "The scholars, professors, and experts in this subject are the ones teaching at McGill and Concordia."

For Toppas, this is just the latest in what he calls escalation after protesters occupied the James Administration building last week.

He added, "They continue to push the envelope. In other words, when they reach one point and no one says anything, well, let’s go a little further. Let’s go a little further."

The camp is set to take place in the lower field and starts on Monday.
