Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, announced his entry into the race to lead the Liberal Party of Canada to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This announcement came during an event Carney held in the Canadian city of Edmonton, where he focused on the importance of rebuilding the Canadian economy and achieving economic recovery, stating that he aims to build “the strongest economy in the world.”
Carney, 59, who previously held significant positions in the financial and economic sectors, confirmed that he seeks to bring about a radical change in the Canadian economy and achieve financial stability in the country. He pointed out that the government needs to be more effective in dealing with economic challenges such as inflation and unemployment, emphasizing that he has the necessary experience to handle major economic crises, citing his experience leading the Bank of England during the financial crisis.
Carney's campaign comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned from his position, opening the door for the election of a new leader for the Liberal Party. While Trudeau's popularity has significantly declined in recent times, prompting him to decide to step down from his position. Trudeau is expected to remain in office until a successor is chosen on March 9.
Carney is set to face strong competition in the race for the leadership of the Liberal Party, as Chrystia Freeland, the former finance minister and Deputy Prime Minister, is considered his main rival. Freeland had announced her resignation last month due to political disagreements with Trudeau, and she is expected to play a major role in the upcoming elections.
Although he presents himself as a "newcomer" to the Canadian political scene, some see Carney as closely linked to the Liberal Party and Trudeau's government. Critics point out that Carney was a member of several advisory committees under the Liberal government and participated in key economic policies during Trudeau's tenure.
If Carney wins the leadership of the party, he may face significant challenges, including the possibility of early elections. Current opinion polls indicate that the Conservative Party may gain an advantage in the upcoming elections, which could force the Liberal Party to adapt to these political challenges.
It is worth noting that Carney has resigned from all his international business positions at the time he announced his political campaign, including his role as a UN special envoy for climate action and finance. This move reflects his full commitment to his political campaign, as he seeks to achieve comprehensive economic change in Canada.
Carney remarked that he has the necessary experience to save the Canadian economy, citing his experience in managing major economic crises globally, such as the financial crisis in 2008. He added, “I know how the business world works, and I know how to make it work for everyone.”
