Container ships operated by the shipping giant "Maersk" are scheduled to stop passing through the Red Sea for an indefinite period following several attacks on commercial ships there.

After the company initially suspended its trips through the attack-affected area for 48 hours from last Sunday to Tuesday, the Danish shipping giant decided to halt shipping traffic through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden until further notice, according to a statement published by the company on its website today, Tuesday.

It pointed out that in cases that will be viable for customers, ships will be redirected via the Cape of Good Hope route around the African continent.

Several commercial ships have been attacked in the Red Sea in recent weeks. Last Saturday evening, the "Maersk Hangzhou" ship was attacked with a shell after passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

According to Maersk, the ship was initially able to continue its journey, but later four boats approached it, opened fire, and passengers attempted to board the cargo ship. The ship, with the help of a military helicopter and its security team, was able to successfully fend off the attack.

Currently, many major shipping companies avoid passing through the Red Sea route and the Suez Canal.

The Red Sea is one of the most important global shipping and trade routes, connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal in Egypt.
