Representative Liz Cheney pledged on Sunday to oppose Republican candidates who support former U.S. President Donald Trump's lies about the stolen 2020 election and announced that Senator Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley are "unfit" for their positions after voting to overturn the presidential election results.

Cheney, one of Trump's biggest critics and vice chair of the congressional investigation committee, told ABC's "This Week" that any broad movement to reject the election could harm the American constitutional system if left unchecked.

On the other hand, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney said she would spend the next two years trying to prevent Trump from returning to the White House in 2024, and refused to tell ABC whether she would run in the Republican primary or outside it if she decided to seek the presidential nomination.

Cheney said in an interview recorded last week, days after losing the Republican primary race to a Trump-backed candidate: "I will focus intensely on working to ensure that we do everything we can to elect election deniers."

Cheney did not say which Republican candidates she would oppose but acknowledged they would include some of her Republican colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives, as Republicans prefer to control the House but may face a greater challenge in securing a majority in the Senate in the midterm elections on November 8, which will determine the balance of power in Congress over the next two years.

The January 6 attack forced Congress to temporarily suspend its certification of Trump's loss to Biden, with Hawley, Cruz, and other Republican members of Congress voting against certifying the election results. Cheney said the actions of Hawley, Cruz, and other Republican lawmakers "essentially threaten the constitutional order and structure" and that "both have made themselves unfit for future office."
