The head of the Lebanese caretaker government, Najib Mikati, requested from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Abdullah Bou Habib to submit a new urgent complaint against Israel to the United Nations Security Council regarding Israel's continued aggression against southern Lebanon, which resulted in martyrs and massive destruction.
In a statement today, Thursday, Mikati condemned the ongoing Israeli aggression against southern Lebanon and what he described as the new massacres committed against Lebanese citizens, especially what happened last night in Nabatieh, where seven people from one family were martyred by Israeli shelling.
He added that Israel persists in its aggression, at a time when the Lebanese government stresses calming down and calls on all parties to adhere to non-escalation.
Mikati also directed in his statement a question to international stakeholders regarding the initiatives about the steps taken to curb Israel, and the head of the Lebanese caretaker government asked the Minister of Environment to call for an urgent meeting of the National Emergency Committee to follow up on the situation.
Mikati pointed out that he was briefed by the Minister of Health on the health and hospital situation in the south and the urgent measures taken.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army confirmed today, Thursday, that it bombed sites in southern Lebanon, while a missile was launched towards the "Roisat al-Alam" Israeli site in the occupied "Kfar Shuba" hills in southern Lebanon.
The Upper Galilee Council, northern Israel, announced the closure of several roads to traffic until further notice, based on the Israeli army's security assessment.
Israeli media attributed to the Upper Galilee Regional Council saying: About 100,000 Israelis were evacuated in the north from their homes in the border towns and will not return before security is restored.
It is noted that at least 11 Lebanese citizens were martyred and others injured yesterday in three Israeli airstrikes on the towns of Al-Sawāneh, Adshit, and Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, following the killing of an Israeli conscript and injuring eight others, one seriously, due to the targeting of the military command headquarters in northern Israel located in the city of Safed, in a rocket attack from Lebanon.
For his part, Dr. Haitham Abu Saeed, head of the UN human rights mission, said that what the Israeli entity is doing today is a continuation of these blatant violations and genocides it commits against the Palestinian people, adding: "We do not understand the extent of the insistence of the Israeli leadership, whether political or military, to continue and expand the aggression against the Palestinian people."
Abu Saeed added during a segment on the program "Sabah Jadeed," broadcast on "Cairo News" channel, presented by journalist Basant Akram, "The aggression is expanding today towards southern Lebanon, and this will harm the region and may drag several countries into this conflict, and we are very concerned about it."
He continued: "We are witnessing an expansion in condemnations against the Israeli entity from its allies, as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand recently joined in calling for a ceasefire in Gaza; this is also a fundamental change in positions, and I believe everyone will follow before the beginning of the detailed trial at the International Court of Justice, and these condemnations will continue and rise, and the Israeli entity will be in greater isolation."
He continued: "The United States has begun changing its tone towards the Israeli entity, and everyone is awaiting the International Court of Justice's decision to build upon it accordingly, and this matter has positives and negatives; the positives lie in wider condemnations emerging against the entity, while the negatives are that we will wait a bit, which is undesirable as we will witness more violations."
Meanwhile, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expressed concern about the escalation in the exchange of fire between Israeli forces and armed groups in Lebanon, and the targeting of areas far from the Blue Line, which resulted in many deaths and caused severe damage to civilian homes and public infrastructure.
According to the United Nations Media Center, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said today that the UNIFIL mission continues full engagement with the parties to de-escalate tensions and to continue implementing its mandate, and peacekeepers continue their work on the ground despite increased risks and challenges.
Dujarric reiterated the United Nations' call for all parties to cease fire and work towards a diplomatic solution, stressing the necessity to exercise caution to spare civilians harm and protect civilians and children.
The spokesperson for the US State Department, Matthew Miller, also expressed concern over the escalation in Lebanon, affirming that one of his country’s main objectives is not to see the conflict expand in any way in the region.
Miller said, "Maintaining regional security is a fundamental goal of our national security and we will continue to pursue it," according to what was reported by the US "Alhurra" channel today.
He added that Washington still believes there is a diplomatic path forward regarding the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and will continue to advance attempts to resolve this issue diplomatically and for both Israelis and Lebanese to return to their homes.
Earlier, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan expressed his country's concern about the possibility of escalation between Israel and Hezbollah, and about Hezbollah’s missiles reaching deep into Israel.
