Members of parliament and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are awaiting April 1st for a wage increase.

The Office of the Speaker of the House of Commons confirmed in press and media statements that as of April 1, MPs will receive a 4.4% salary increase.

The office stated: "Additional salaries are adjusted every year on April 1, and currently, Canadian parliament members receive a basic salary of $194,600, and their salaries will see an increase of $8,500 to $203,100 on April 1."

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau currently receives a salary of $194,600 as Prime Minister, and a basic salary as an MP amounting to $194,600.

He will see a salary increase of $17,000, bringing his total basic pay to $406,200.

The wage increase comes at a time when many Canadians are struggling with the rising cost of living.

According to a recent survey conducted by Leger on behalf of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF), 80% of survey participants do not support increasing parliament members' salaries.

The CTF pointed out that the federal government froze parliament members' salary increases between 2010 and 2013 due to the recession in the 2008-2009 period.
