China has not yet recovered from the shock of the coronavirus outbreak when doctors sounded a new alarm, warning of the appearance of the Langya virus, which has infected 35 people.
Langya belongs to a family of viruses known to kill up to three-quarters of humans in severe infection cases.
Scientists believe that the shrew, which belongs to the hedgehog family, is the main source of the spread of this disease.
None of the new cases discovered in Henan and Shandong provinces in eastern China resulted in death, and most were mild symptoms resembling influenza.
According to a study published in the "New England Journal of Medicine," researchers led by the Beijing Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology tracked the symptoms in patients to determine how affected people were by the Langya virus.
The researchers found that the most common symptoms experienced by Langya patients were fever, fatigue, cough, loss of appetite, muscle pain, and nausea.
About 35 percent experienced liver problems, while 8 percent showed a decline in kidney function.
