European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde stated that the bank will start lowering interest rates when it is convinced that inflation is on the way back to the target rate, which is 2%.

Lagarde said in statements to the "France 2" TV network yesterday, Thursday: "I cannot specify a date to lower the interest rate, but I can say that if we win this battle, we will reach 2% by 2025 according to our estimates."

She added in her statements, which were reported by Bloomberg News Agency: "I am very confident that interest rates will begin to decline as soon as we reach this certainty."

On the other hand, Lagarde warned that looking at the first term of former US President Donald Trump raises concerns about the possibility of his return to power in 2025.

Lagarde mentioned in the interview with the "France 2" TV network yesterday that "if we are going to benefit from the lessons of history, and through the way Trump led during his first term which lasted four years, it is clear that this matter represents a threat."

She added in her statements reported by Bloomberg News Agency: "It is enough to look at the trade tariffs, the commitment to NATO, and the battle against climate change... through these three points alone in the past, American interests were not aligned with European interests."

Opinion polls preceding the upcoming US elections in November indicate the possibility of a new confrontation between former President Trump and current President Joe Biden. Despite legal issues and the potential for criminal conviction, Republican Trump still leads Democrat Biden in opinion polls.

It is noteworthy that Lagarde, who has been president of the European Central Bank since November 2019, had previously criticized Trump, but these recent statements represent her strongest criticisms of the former US president since assuming her current position.
