A spokesperson for the Taliban movement said today, Monday, that an old landmine found by children in eastern Afghanistan exploded while they were playing with it, killing nine children.
Hamidullah Nizar, director of the media and culture department of the Taliban in Ghazni, said that the mine found by the children near their village in Jiro district of Ghazni province dates back decades.
He added that the explosion that occurred on Sunday led to the death of five boys and four girls aged between 5 and 10 years.
Afghanistan has suffered decades of war and still poses a great danger to children who collect scrap metal to sell to support their families. Many are killed or maimed when they encounter unexploded ordnance.
