The death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen following the latest airstrikes on Palestinian territories, as the Israeli army works to eliminate Hamas leaders and destroy the group that attacked southern Israel nearly four months ago.
The strikes targeted two homes and a mosque in central Gaza on Sunday, killing 29 people and injuring at least 60 others. Separate airstrikes in Rafah, the enclave city in the far south, killed two children aged between 12 and 2, according to the hospital registry office where the bodies were taken.
The Israeli army said it raided the headquarters of a Hamas brigade in the southern city of Khan Younis and found what it called training materials for the October 7 attack in southern Israel that killed about 1,200 people, most of them civilians. The army said the materials included "simulation models of entrance gates in the Israeli kibbutz, military bases, and armored vehicles in the Israel Defense Forces."
The Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health reported that the Israeli-initiated attack on Gaza has killed 27,365 people and injured more than 66,000 in Gaza as of Sunday morning, confirming that most of the dead were women and children.
The White House urged Israel to make greater efforts to avoid harming civilians and allow more aid to reach the besieged enclave. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to return to the region this week, starting Monday in Saudi Arabia, with stops planned in Egypt, Qatar, Israel, and the West Bank.
The Israeli navy targets the "amazing" food convoy
A UN official accused the Israeli navy of striking a humanitarian convoy carrying food heading to northern Gaza.
Thomas White, director of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, said in a post on platform X that the food convoy was waiting to move to northern Gaza when it was hit by Israeli naval fire Monday morning.
White posted photos showing a truck parked on the roadside with damage to its cargo; there was no immediate comment from the Israeli army, which said it was investigating the report.
Juliet Touma, head of communications at the agency known as UNRWA, said no one was injured in the attack, which took place north of the Wadi Qalal area in central Gaza.
The UN confirms it is struggling to send aid to war-torn northern Gaza, which Israel struck in the early weeks of the war, due to ongoing fighting.
Monday’s incident came after more than ten countries, including the United States, announced they would suspend funding to UNRWA over Israeli allegations that 12 of its 13,000 Gaza staff participated in the October 7 attacks against Israel, which triggered the war.
Israeli police kill 14-year-old child
Israeli police said officers shot a Palestinian boy who allegedly tried to stab them in the occupied West Bank.
Police stated that paramilitary border police were conducting a routine security check in the East Jerusalem area when the 14-year-old allegedly pulled out a knife and attempted to stab officers. Police added that officers shot the teenager and were unharmed.
In security footage of the incident released by the police, a person is seen approaching the officers and beginning to recoil from one of them and making stabbing motions. While attempting to flee, officers open fire and the suspect falls to the ground.
Police released a photo of a kitchen knife they said was used in the stabbing attempt, and said the teenager was from East Jerusalem, but his name was not immediately known.
Critics of Israel say its security services use excessive force against Palestinian suspects, allegations that intensified during the country’s war against Hamas in Gaza. Israel has conducted nighttime raids in the West Bank to crack down on suspected militants there.
Palestinians have carried out several attacks against Israeli security forces and civilians in the West Bank and Israel since the start of Israel’s war on October 7.
Spain pledges to provide 3.8 million US dollars
Spain's Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, said his government will grant 3.5 million euros (3.8 million US dollars) to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees to help it maintain its activities in the short term.
UNRWA is the main humanitarian aid organization in Gaza. The Spanish government confirms it is closely monitoring the investigation into Israeli allegations and has urged the European Union to continue funding the agency.
