The U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein, during his visit to Beirut, made statements confirming that he would not publicly disclose the results of the talks he held in Lebanon regarding the escalation between Hezbollah and Israel. Hochstein clarified that he will head to Israel soon in an attempt to push the negotiations toward a conclusion that contributes to ending the ongoing crisis.
These statements come in the context of intense diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions between the parties, against the backdrop of the war in Gaza and its regional impact, as Lebanon represents a potential theater for a new escalation in tensions.
In a press conference held by U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein in Beirut on Wednesday, he affirmed that the United States is striving to achieve an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. These efforts come after fighting escalated since October 2023 amid the war between Israel and Hamas, where Hezbollah entered the conflict in support of Gaza.
Hochstein pointed out that the commitment to United Nations Resolution 1701, which ended the war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006, is no longer sufficient to guarantee peace. He called for a new mechanism to ensure the decision is implemented fairly and transparently. He also expressed that linking Lebanon's stability to other regional conflicts, such as the situation in Gaza, is not in the interest of the Lebanese people.
During his visit, Hochstein held talks with senior Lebanese officials, including Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and Army Commander Joseph Aoun. He discussed with them the details of achieving a ceasefire and ensuring border stability, with the Lebanese side emphasizing the need to stop the ongoing Israeli aggressions.
For its part, Israel clarified that it will continue its military operations even if a ceasefire is reached, to ensure Hezbollah does not rebuild its military strength. These U.S. efforts are part of broader diplomatic efforts to avoid further escalation in the region.
