A difficult winter expected by Europeans due to Russia's threats of total gas supply cuts

Europeans are preparing for a difficult winter during which Russian gas imports will be below their usual levels, in one of the most impactful consequences of the Ukraine war on their daily lives.

It is noted that in recent months, Russia has completely stopped pumping gas to Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and Poland, and has significantly reduced quantities to other countries.

Russia will suspend its gas exports to Germany via the "Nord Stream 1" pipeline for a few days later this month, in the second such stoppage during the summer.

Although Moscow justifies this measure as maintenance work, Berlin has previously accused it of using energy resources as a weapon amid tensions with the West over Ukraine.

The quantities of gas pumped through the "Nord Stream 1" pipeline last July dropped by 70 percent compared to the same period in 2021, according to experts from the AFP agency.

European governments fear a winter during which home heating devices remain cold and factories halt their production cycles.

Western parties see Russian President Vladimir Putin using energy resources as a tool in the confrontation with the West, which has imposed sanctions on his country following its invasion of Ukraine since February.

The reduction in the flow of these resources has led to a sharp rise in gas prices, which has reflected in increased electricity prices due to many power plants relying on this material for energy generation. Adding to the problem, oil prices have also risen, despite having somewhat declined recently.
