The Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris expressed her support for a ceasefire in the Gaza war and the release of hostages, as she officially accepted her party's nomination yesterday, Thursday.
Harris said, on the last night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, that regarding the war in Gaza, President (Joe) Biden and I are working around the clock, because now is the right time to reach an agreement on the hostages and a ceasefire agreement.
Harris continued, "I will always support Israel's right to defend itself."
She added that at the same time, what has happened in Gaza over the past ten months has been devastating. Many innocent lives have been lost, and desperate hungry people have fled in search of safety, time and again, and the scale of suffering is shocking.
She continued that she and Biden are working to end the war, release the hostages, and ensure Israel's security.
She added that the suffering in the Gaza Strip must end, and Palestinians must be able to realize their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination.
Israel launched its war on the Gaza Strip following Hamas' attack on the south of the country on October 7, which resulted in the death of 1,200 people and the taking of hostages who were transported to the Gaza Strip.
The war waged by Israel against the Gaza Strip has resulted in 40,265 martyrs, along with more than 93,144 injuries, and a catastrophic humanitarian crisis due to food and medicine shortages and massive destruction of buildings and infrastructure.
