Ontario yesterday and many areas in Canada witnessed one of the distinctive historical traditions and annual celebrations of Groundhog Day, which predicts the fate of winter and its end date.
Jay Kirkland, the mayor of South Bruce, spoke, who can speak the fast language of Groundhogese with the groundhog Wiarton Willie, where he told him whether he saw his shadow or not.
If Wiarton Willie saw his shadow, we will witness six more weeks of winter; if he does not see his shadow, Ontario will witness an early spring. After talking with Willie, the mayor told the gathered crowd: "No shadow, which means we will see an early spring!"
This was the third consecutive year that little Willie did not see his shadow, leading to a prediction of an early spring.
This annual tradition is carried out in many North American communities on February 2nd, where some use stuffed animals while other communities use lobsters, but here in Ontario, a groundhog named Wiarton Willie comes out.
Earlier Friday morning at Shubenacadie Wildlife Park in Nova Scotia, the province's most famous groundhog said it will also be an early spring this year.
