The Ontario government announced that it will raise the minimum wage in the province in the fall.
Starting October 1, the minimum wage in the province will be $17.20, up from the current minimum wage of $16.55.
The province said in a statement released on Thursday that the annual wage increase of 3.9 percent is based on the Ontario Consumer Price Index (CPI), making Ontario's minimum wage the second highest in Canada.
This increase comes amid an affordability crisis in the province.
The government also stated that a worker earning the general minimum wage and working 40 hours a week will see an annual wage increase of up to $1,355.
There were 935,600 workers earning $17.20 or less per hour in 2023.
