The graduation ceremonies for students of the University of Toronto are set to begin today, with a pro-Palestinian camp remaining on campus despite pending legal actions.
More than 30 celebrations are scheduled until June 21, and the university states that all events will proceed as planned with additional precautions being taken.
The university sought to clear the camp before the call started through an urgent court order, but the presiding judge said that the earliest hearing could be held on June 19 to give demonstrators a fair chance to respond.
The delay means that most graduates and their families attending the ceremonies in the downtown campus are likely to pass by the fenced camp, and the university has expressed concerns about potential disruptions.
However, the demonstrators stated that they do not see how their presence would disrupt the graduation events, and they are determined to stay until the university meets demands related to divesting from companies benefiting from the Israeli attack on Gaza.
A number of prominent Jewish organizations planning to intervene in the court proceedings regarding the court order have expressed their opposition to the protest and plan to hold a press conference near the campus this morning.
