The French authorities thwarted several plots to disrupt the 2024 Olympics, officials announced on Wednesday, two days before the opening ceremony of the summer games in Paris.

France has been on high alert in recent weeks as preparations for hosting the Olympics reached their final stage. The games officially kick off with a lavish opening ceremony along the Seine River on Friday, amidst tight security measures.

Prosecutors in Paris announced on Wednesday that they had arrested a 40-year-old man of Russian origin on Tuesday in his apartment in Paris on suspicion of planning to "destabilize the Olympic games."

He has been charged with "carrying out an intelligence operation at the request of a foreign power" with the aim of "stirring hostilities in France," crimes that carry a penalty of up to 30 years in prison in France, according to a statement from the Paris prosecutor’s office.

Prosecutors said that during an official search of the suspect's home in Paris, police agents found items that "raised concerns about his intention to organize events that could destabilize the Olympic games."

The organizers of the games are facing major security challenges, including fears of cyber attacks, amid intense international tensions due to the Russian war in Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

There are also sophisticated disinformation campaigns organized from Russia, targeting the Olympic games and the recent French elections, according to French officials and cybersecurity experts in Europe and the United States.

Earlier on Wednesday, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said in an interview with French channel BFMTV that a young man was arrested in Gironde, a region in southwestern France, on suspicion of "planning a violent act against the Olympic games."

Darmanin stated that police arrested an 18-year-old on Tuesday on charges of planning to target "the organization of the games."

No details were provided about the potential targets of the suspect or whether they were in Paris or in other French cities hosting the Olympic events, which will run until August 11.

Darmanin said, "We are still working on this case... (we) avoid giving details... but we believe there is a connection. It has been confirmed that this person wanted to attack the Olympic games."

Paris has deployed 35,000 police officers daily in preparation for the Olympic games, with numbers expected to rise to 45,000 for the opening ceremony. In addition, 10,000 soldiers are participating in security operations in the Paris area.

A military force of 10,000 soldiers is patrolling the streets and sites in the Paris area and carrying out other security missions.

France is also receiving assistance from more than 40 countries that have sent together at least 1,900 police reinforcements.
