Ford is set to recall the Maverick small trucks in Canada due to a potential rear light failure.

According to the automaker, the onboard computer in some 2022 to 2024 Maverick models may incorrectly detect excessive current, causing one or both of the rear lights to remain dark while driving.

The report published by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains that non-illuminated rear position lights can reduce visibility for other drivers in dark conditions, increasing the risk of a collision.

Nearly 243,000 Maverick pickup trucks have been recalled in the United States due to this issue. The Canadian recall has not yet been officially announced by Ford or the Canadian Transportation Agency, and the number of vehicles affected in Canada is still unknown.

When announcing the recall in the United States on May 1st, Ford stated that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue, and that other external lights on the small trucks will remain operational.

A Ford spokesperson confirmed in an email to CTVNews.ca: "Yes, this will also affect Canada."

The Canadian Transportation Agency maintains an online vehicle safety recall database that can be searched for updates.

A spokesperson for the Canadian Transportation Agency explained in an email to CTVNews.ca: "When the Canadian Transportation Agency is notified of a recall by the vehicle manufacturer, the agency shares the information in the database."

"The Canadian Transportation Agency recommends that all vehicle owners register their cars with the manufacturer to ensure they are notified when a safety recall is issued, and to make the necessary arrangements to repair any recalls as soon as they are notified."

Ford says that dealers will be able to update the vehicle software to fix the issue.

Ford Mavericks from 2022 to 2024 are also currently subject to at least 15 recalls in Canada due to issues affecting everything from brakes to airbags to engines.
