The Canadian Ministry of Health is recalling thousands of common heat pumps across the country due to a potential risk of "excessive heat exposure."

Last month, the federal agency stated that pumps branded Amana, Daikin, and Goodman have been recalled because a power outage can cause the product to overheat when power is restored - even if the thermostat is in cooling mode.

Nine models of both Amana and Daikin are affected by the recall, along with four pumps bearing the Goodman brand.

The recall noted: (A) Approximately 5,549 units of the affected products were sold in Canada and about 56,028 units in the United States, adding that the products were sold between May 2022 and April 2024.

There have been no reports of injuries or overheating incidents as of June 13.

A corrective update for the affected products is available, and the health agency advises turning off any unit that has not received the update yet, unless immediate air conditioning is needed.

Daikin Comfort Technologies is remotely updating the firmware for all affected units connected to Wi-Fi, but units with heat pumps not connected to Wi-Fi are requested to visit the company's website for guidance on how to perform the update.
