In a leaked video clip, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin was seen dancing and singing with friends at a private party. The 36-year-old Sanna stands in front of the camera sitting on her knees with her hands behind her head, involved in a group hug.
Countless similar videos are shared daily on social media by young and not-so-young people celebrating in Finland and around the world. But the leak sparked controversy among Finns about the appropriate level of behavior for the Prime Minister, especially considering Russia's neighboring attack on Ukraine, which prompted the long-neutral Finland and Sweden to apply for NATO membership.
Marin, who leads the left-wing Social Democratic Party, faced a barrage of questions about the party: Were there drugs? Alcohol? Was she working or on summer vacation? Was she alert enough to handle an emergency if it arose?
The Finnish Prime Minister took a drug test after the party video caused a stir, saying: "No drugs, just a lot of dancing at a party."
The video, filmed by someone at the party, was leaked on social media and caught the attention of Finnish media this week. Marin said she attended the party in recent weeks but refused to specify the place and time. She also admitted that she and her friends celebrated "loudly," but to her knowledge, there were no drugs.
Marin told reporters, "I hope it is acceptable in 2022 that even decision-makers dance, sing, and go to parties. I did not want to publish any pictures, but it is up to the voters to decide what they think."
The prime minister, married and with a 4-year-old daughter, insisted that despite being the head of the Finnish government, she is like anyone else her age who likes to have a good time with friends and family in their free time.
On the other hand, some supporters say the criticism directed at the prime minister is indicative of gender discrimination.
Anu Koivonen, a professor of social studies at the University of Turku in Finland, said she does not think gender was a decisive factor in the fuss over the leaked video. Rather, she said the party itself was not a big problem, but the fact that the video was leaked could be seen as a transient judgment by the prime minister regarding the people she surrounded herself with.
