U.S. President Joe Biden described the killing of Hamas leader Yehya Sinwar on Thursday as "a good day for Israel, America, and the world," speaking of "an opportunity for a future for Gaza without Hamas in power."

Biden stated in a statement from the White House that Sinwar, as a leader of Hamas, was "responsible for the deaths of thousands of Israelis and Palestinians, American citizens, and citizens from over 30 countries."

He added that Sinwar's death "proves that no terrorist anywhere in the world can escape justice, no matter how long it takes."

He continued that shortly after the attack on October 7, he directed "special operations personnel and U.S. intelligence agencies to work alongside their Israeli counterparts to help locate and track down Sinwar and other Hamas leaders hiding in Gaza."

Biden confirmed that he would speak "soon with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders to congratulate them, to discuss how to bring the hostages back to their families, and to end this war once and for all."

Biden noted that with Sinwar's death, there would be an opportunity for a future for Gaza without Hamas in power, and for a political settlement that provides a better future for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Biden also said that Sinwar had been "an insurmountable obstacle to achieving all these goals, and today that obstacle no longer exists," while adding at the same time that "there is still a lot of work ahead of us."
