Riley Keough, granddaughter of Elvis Presley, has planned to auction off her Graceland property in Memphis after a company attempted to sell the estate based on claims of non-payment of a loan using the former rock and roll icon's home as collateral.
Court documents showed that a public auction of the property was scheduled for Thursday of this week, but a Memphis judge blocked the sale after Keough sought to issue a temporary restraining order and filed a lawsuit.
A public notice of the mortgage sale for the 13-acre property, which was published earlier in May, stated that Promenade Trust, which controls the Graceland museum, owes $3.8 million after failing to repay a loan from 2018. Keough inherited the trust and ownership of the home after the death of her mother Lisa Marie Presley last year, and the lawsuit claims that Lisa Marie Presley used Graceland as collateral to secure the loan.
Naussany Investments and Private Lending stated that Lisa Marie Presley failed to pay back the loan and sought to sell the property on the courthouse steps, according to the mortgage sale notice. Keough, on behalf of Promenade Trust, filed the lawsuit last week, alleging that Naussany submitted fraudulent documents regarding the loan and the unpaid amount in September 2023.
Keough's attorney wrote in the lawsuit: "These documents are forged. Lisa Marie Presley did not borrow any money from Naussany Investments and never provided a deed of trust to Naussany Investments."
W. Bradley Russell, an attorney for Naussany Investments, declined to comment on Tuesday.
A court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in the Shelby County Chancery Court.
Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. stated in a release on Tuesday: "Elvis Presley Enterprises can confirm that these claims are fraudulent; there is no mortgage sale; simply put, the counter lawsuit that has been filed aims to halt the fraud."
Graceland opened as a museum and tourist destination in 1982 in honor of Elvis Presley, the rock and roll star and actor who passed away in August 1977 at the age of 42. It attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
