A Minnesota police official said nine people were arrested while attempting to cross the border from Canada into the United States through illegal entry points on Tuesday.

This came after the group called the police for help because some were suffering from hypothermia.

Steve Gust, Roseau police chief, also said some members of the group were arrested after calling 911 in the morning to request assistance.

He told the Canadian press that others were taken to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

Gust also added that the group was trying to enter Minnesota from Manitoba through a wooded area near Sprague, about 145 kilometers southeast of Winnipeg.

Roseau is located about 20 kilometers south of the Minnesota border shared with Manitoba.

Meanwhile, U.S. authorities have contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitoba to assist in searching an area near the border near Sprague for a missing person, according to RCMP spokeswoman Julie Courchaine.

She added on Tuesday: “The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Search and Rescue is also heading there.”

This comes just over a year after a family of four from India froze to death while trying to walk south across the border near Emerson in Manitoba.
