After several weeks, Canada, like other countries such as Belgium, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States of America, began assisting families holding the nationalities of these countries to escape the circle of brutal war waged by Israeli occupation forces against unarmed civilians in the Gaza Strip, which led to the death of tens of thousands of victims and the destruction of stone and trees.
This initiative did not assist all families holding these countries' nationalities to safely exit the Gaza Strip, but there are dozens who lost their lives as entire families were killed amid the genocide war waged by Israel.
However, amidst this, Canada presented a humanitarian initiative to reunite Gaza families in Canada, especially those who have first-degree relatives holding Canadian citizenship, following initiatives with nationals of countries subjected to devastating wars like Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, and recently Sudan. But in the case of the people of Gaza, the situation was extremely complicated, and the proposed program was disappointing due to the very complex conditions set, as it is very difficult for Canadian families to implement it to reunite the rest of their family members living under the fierce war waged by the occupation on the innocent in the Gaza Strip, who have lost all their resources, making them await humanitarian aid to continue living. Moreover, their Canadian relatives would not be able to bear the costs of bringing them from Gaza to Canada.
However, the Canadian government offered an interest-free loan to be repaid during the granted residency period for these arrivals to ensure that they strive and seek work rather than rely on state aid, thereby not representing an additional burden alongside the massive economic challenges the country faces.
Here, I do not want to justify the Canadian government's slow procedures in speeding up the transfer of these citizens from Gaza to Canada, especially given the fear of accusations that Canada is working to displace Palestinians from Gaza, and everyone knows this matter is highly sensitive internationally and may embarrass Canada before the international community.
Instead, the Canadian government has significant concerns about the infiltration of individuals belonging to the Palestinian resistance and what that means for Canadian national security according to their assessments, making the process of removing these citizens extremely difficult as well.
This is in addition to the major obstacles imposed by Israel, which wants to increase the suffering of Palestinians and intensify killing them on the one hand, and on the other hand Egypt's stance, which sees this as facilitating voluntary migration and fears accusations of working to displace Palestinians from their land.
The question is, why hasn't Canada taken bolder and stricter steps so far to help these families at least to get them out of Gaza and provide guarantees for residency in Cairo until the completion of legitimate and required security checks, and thereby be able to determine who can be granted a visa to travel to Canada with dignity and honor and who is rejected for security reasons and therefore returned to Gaza or allowed to choose their decision regarding their new destination.
This matter at least provides an opportunity to ensure the safety of innocent people from the families who are burnt by the fire of war, hunger, and psychological destruction.
This also allows easing psychological pressure on relatives holding Canadian citizenship or permanent residency in Canada and makes them highly appreciate this stance of the Canadian government, which still holds a negative position in the eyes of many qualified Canadians for this program.
This will give them a ray of hope and thereby grant them the strength to express carrying the Canadian identity and pride in their sincere and honest affiliation to Canada when they see it dealing with one humanitarian standard away from the double standards seen by many towards the people of Gaza exclusively, who have faced harsher conditions than other innocent civilians in Gaza.
This also opens the way for losing trust in Canada's claim of upholding human rights, preserving dignity, and bridging gaps between the government and Canadian citizens qualified for this program.
This matter requires great courage and high human ethics to be a driving and motivating force to find a clearer, more flexible executive mechanism to face the inhumane challenges arising from this barbaric and brutal war and thus actively and faithfully participate in protecting the lives of innocent people from killing and hunger.
Finally, I can say that what befits great Canada is much greater actions than what we see of hesitation and slowness in implementing this humanitarian program and the processes of evacuating people from Rafah crossing for these citizens, affirming my deep understanding of the challenges facing such a step, but in my estimation, Canada’s status qualifies it to take a major step in coordination with all parties to ensure the exit and evacuation of these families and protect them from death, killing, or hunger as soon as possible, especially amid Israeli threats to invade the small city of Rafah, which hosts the majority of Gaza Strip residents... Therefore, I hope my expectations are not disappointed!
