A man was killed and a woman is in critical condition after construction equipment collided with a panoramic cable car for sightseeing at the famous Mont Tremblant resort.

According to the provincial police, a 911 emergency call came shortly after 11:30 AM, following the collision of a construction machine operated by a third party with the panoramic gondola, causing the two people on board to be ejected and then fall several meters to the ground at the site, about 130 kilometers northwest of Montreal.

Eric Cadot, a spokesperson for Quebec police, said that on Sunday afternoon, one of the passengers, the man, died after surgery in the hospital, and the second passenger, a woman, remains seriously injured and was in a life-threatening condition after being transferred to a hospital in Montreal.

Both victims are not from the Mont Tremblant area, and no further information regarding their identities has been disclosed. Police officers and the major crimes unit were called to the scene, which is a basic protocol to try to determine the causes and circumstances of the accident.

Camil Savard, another police spokesperson told CTV News that the Quebec Occupational Health and Safety Board is cooperating with the police in their investigations, confirming that investigators are exploring all possible hypotheses for the accident, including criminal negligence causing death, and the investigation is still ongoing.

Aird, a spokesperson for the resort, said this is the first time a gondola crash has happened on the mountain, calling it a major accident. "We express our condolences to the families, and now we are working closely with the police."

Aird added, "Guests who were on the other gondola were evacuated without any incidents. The gondola will be closed until further notice."

Quebec’s Tourism Minister Caroline Proulx responded to the incident on Twitter, describing it as a "sad accident," writing, "All authorities are on site to shed light on the matter, and we are closely monitoring the situation."

The Tremblant resort said in a Facebook post shortly after 3 PM that the Blues music festival and other activities were canceled for the rest of the day "out of respect for the participants."
