Azerbaijan announced on Thursday that it has arrested a former president of the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which it took control of following the attack launched by Baku last month.
Azerbaijan stated that it has arrested Araik Harutyunyan, who resigned shortly before the Baku attack, "on suspicion of waging an aggressive war" against Azerbaijan and committing war crimes, according to a joint statement from the prosecutor's office and the security service.
On Wednesday, the Armenian Foreign Ministry "strongly" condemned Azerbaijan for arresting several separatist leaders from Nagorno-Karabakh.
Harutyunyan, who is 49 years old, headed the separatist government during the armed conflict in 2020 between Baku and Yerevan that erupted over control of the mountainous region, and he resigned from his position in early September, shortly before the Baku attack.
