Two people were injured, one of them a firefighter, after a fire with four alarms in a row of three-storey buildings in the Queen West area of the city.
The fire broke out in a building located on Queen Street West, west of Bathurst Street, shortly after 1:30 a.m.
Toronto Fire told CP24 that three buildings, which include commercial spaces on the ground floor and residential units above, became "heavily involved."
Officials said flames and smoke could be seen rising from the rooftops of the buildings, while a spokesperson for Toronto Fire stated that crews were deploying aerial and ground operations to combat the fire.
Paramedics confirmed that two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Toronto Fire said one of those individuals was a firefighter injured during firefighting operations. Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg told reporters at the scene this morning, Wednesday, that both were taken to the hospital as a precaution and are in stable condition.
TTC provided buses to accommodate any displaced residents due to the fire.
The fire has now been brought under control and crews are working with TTC to reopen Bathurst Street and Queen Street.
Pegg said, "I know how disruptive this is, especially as we head into the morning commute, so I thank everyone for their patience."
He added that crews will remain on the scene for some time to conduct an investigation into the fire's cause and circumstances surrounding it.
"We will have crews here for the foreseeable future. Our Fire Investigation team has been notified. Pegg said, "They will also respond."
The fire on Queen Street represents the second incident within the past 12 hours where a firefighter was injured.
A firefighter who was responding to a fire in North York last night sustained serious injuries after falling into a basement of a home. He is currently receiving treatment at Toronto Trauma Center.
Pegg said, "Last night was a stark reminder of the reality of what our crews do every day."
"It's a dangerous job. It occurs in a highly dynamic environment and unfortunately, there are times when we see injuries. So my thoughts and prayers are with them."
He indicated that investigations will be conducted to determine the causes that led to the injuries.
Pegg said, "Any time an injury occurs to one of our firefighters, and certainly if it is a serious injury, there are mandatory investigations. A serious injury leads to a full and thorough investigation conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour." "That's what's happening in North York."
