The Spanish authorities said on Monday that at least three people have died and three are missing due to heavy rains causing severe flooding in central Spain, leading to the closure of roads, subway lines, and high-speed train tracks.

Emergency services reported that helicopters have been dispatched to rescue people who sought refuge on the roofs of their homes in the Toledo area, which is located about 50 kilometers southwest of Madrid.

The sudden heavy rains, which have persisted since Sunday until early Monday, have turned streets into rivers of mud, sweeping away cars and garbage bins in areas of Madrid, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, and Valencia. Snow has also fallen in many areas.

Two people have also died in the rural area surrounding Toledo, where the Spanish meteorological agency recorded a record level of rainfall reaching 90 liters per square meter on Sunday.

The police said that one of the deceased was a young man who was trapped in a lift filled with water, while another was inside a car when it was inundated.

The third victim was a 50-year-old man who was reported missing before his body was found floating in a river near his home in the town of Camarena.

Emergency services also said they dealt with around 1,200 incidents in the Madrid area last night, and firefighters and police are searching for a man in the remote area of Aldea del Fresno located southwest of Madrid.

The man and his son went missing when their car fell into the Alberche River after a sudden flood caused a collapse.

Emergency services in Madrid said, "We rescued the son after he climbed one of the trees."

Rescue teams are also searching for a woman who disappeared under similar circumstances near Toledo and an 84-year-old man who was swept away by water and mud in Villamanta, west of Madrid.

The Ministry of Defense also stated that it has deployed army engineers to build a bridge in Aldea del Fresno to connect both banks after the original bridge collapsed.
