Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced her intention to run for the leadership of the Liberal Party, according to a source close to her campaign team, just before the inauguration ceremony of the elected U.S. President Donald Trump.
Freeland's first political promise will be to impose a 100% tariff on U.S. imports, in response to the tariffs that Trump has promised to impose on Canadian imports.
Trump has pledged to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico, starting from his inauguration day on January 20.
Freeland resigned from her position last December, after being informed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of his intention to replace her with former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney.
In her resignation letter, Freeland expressed her disagreement with Trudeau on certain policies, including the Goods and Services Tax (GST) holiday, which she described as a showy policy that the country cannot afford.
The Liberal Party will choose its new leader on March 9.
