The Chinese envoy to the United Nations called for calm and restraint on Monday following Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel in response to the latter's deadly attack on a building associated with the Iranian embassy in Syria.
The Chinese news agency "Xinhua" quoted Dai Bing, the Chargé d'Affaires of China's permanent mission to the United Nations, as saying, "China calls on the parties involved to exercise utmost calm and restraint and to resolve their differences and disputes in accordance with the purposes of the United Nations Charter and international law to prevent further escalation."
He pointed out that on April 1, the Iranian diplomatic missions in Syria were subjected to an air attack, resulting in the deaths of several Iranian individuals and causing significant damage to buildings, emphasizing that "this is a serious violation of the United Nations Charter and international law and a breach of the sovereignty of both Syria and Iran. This attack is extremely brutal."
Dai stated that China has expressed its deep concern over the escalation that occurred on Saturday, "and noted that Iran mentioned that its military action was in response to the Israeli aggression against its diplomatic missions and can be considered a closed matter."
He indicated that "the current situation is the latest extension of the conflict in Gaza, serving as yet another reminder that the Palestinian issue remains at the core of Middle Eastern issues and affects long-term peace, stability, and security in the region."
The Chinese envoy mentioned that "if the flames of conflict in Gaza are allowed to continue, the indirect negative repercussions are likely to spread even further, which would increase instability in the region. The countries and peoples of the Middle East do not wish to see, nor can they bear a larger conflict or war. Therefore, the priority lies in implementing Security Council Resolution 2728 and ensuring an immediate ceasefire in Gaza."
Dai affirmed that the ultimate solution is the implementation of a two-state solution and ending the vicious cycle of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, stating that China calls on the international community, "especially influential countries, to play a constructive role in promoting peace and stability in the region," according to the Chinese agency.
