The Canadian federal government has issued a decision to restrict the hours of travel and undertake a round trip to renew the temporary immigration status of anyone at 12 points of entry on the Canada-U.S. border.
Canadian media reported that this measure allows non-Canadians to renew their temporary status by crossing the border briefly into the United States, and upon returning to Canada, they can confirm or renew their temporary resident status, work permit, or student visa.
On the other hand, although this practice is legal, the Canada Border Services Agency does not encourage people to use it, as it does not guarantee the return of non-Canadians who leave Canada. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer highlighted this practice, calling on Canada to move quickly, stating, "It increases traffic and wait times at the border, hindering the smooth flow of trade between our two countries, and also impedes tourism."
The Canada Border Services Agency clarified that restrictions have been placed on "round trip" hours to allow officers to work efficiently during periods of high congestion and to focus on other priorities, such as vulnerable travelers, imports, asylum claims, and other essential immigration services.
