A federal government unit tasked with removing war criminals from Canada has not published a report on its activities for more than eight years.

The War Crimes Program is a joint effort involving the federal Departments of Justice and Immigration, the Canada Border Services Agency, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The idea of a joint government effort on war criminals arose in 1987 after the Deschênes Commission on war criminals confirmed that Canada allowed former Nazis to enter the country after World War II.

The program issued annual reports on its activities investigating, prosecuting, and deporting suspected war criminals for 10 years, but thereafter only issued two reports between 2008 and 2015 and has not issued anything since then.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said the program has been trying to collect data since 2016 in order to publish an update.

Canada’s efforts have come under increasing scrutiny since Parliament commended a man last September who was later identified as a killer with a Nazi unit in Ukraine during World War II.
