The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has warned about grocery discount-related scams via text messages and emails that ask recipients to click on links to receive payments and fill out forms.
Here is an example of the fraudulent message wording shared by the agency: “To receive your payment, click here and complete the form.”
CRA stated that these messages are fake and the links contained within them should not be clicked.
CRA also urges recipients to be cautious of notifications requesting personal or financial information.
The agency said in a tweet: “Grocery discount payments will be provided after the legislation is enacted.”
The one-time grocery discount, proposed in this year’s federal budget, aims to help Canadians amid inflation in purchasing goods and necessities.
The grocery discount will be sent through the Goods and Services Tax credit if the bill passes in the House of Commons.
The one-time grocery discount will also provide $2.5 billion to one million Canadians and families with low and middle incomes.
Eligible couples with two children will receive up to $467, single Canadians without children will receive up to $234, and seniors will receive up to $225.
Also, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, there were 6,610 fraud reports and 3,923 fraud victims in January.
If you are a victim of fraud, you can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 18884958501 or through the fraud reporting system.
