The liberal government announced that it has proposed changes to the asylum application system in Canada, which aim to expedite the deportation process of asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected from the country.
The proposed amendments were announced two weeks ago in the federal budget for 2024.
This comes at a time when Canada is dealing with a record number of asylum seekers.
The proposal includes changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to facilitate the claims process to enhance decision-making more quickly and also to expedite deportation processes.
The office of Immigration Minister Marc Miller did not provide further information on this matter.
The Canadian Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship IRCC states that the new measures will improve the efficiency of the asylum system without compromising fairness or compassion for those in need of protection.
